Sheffield Wednesday v Wycombe Wanderers
Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 Wycombe
WYCOMBE were unable to stand in Sheffield Wednesday's way as they sealed their Championship return at Hillsborough.
An injury-ravaged Wanderers side battled bravely in Yorkshire but had goalkeeper Nikki Bull to thank for keeping the score respectable.
The Owls sealed the second automatic promotion spot in front of 38,000 delirious Owls fans thanks to goals from Michail Antonio and Nile Ranger.
An electric atmosphere greeted Wycombe – who handed a start to Matt McClure – and were forced into an early change with Charles Dunne replacing injured left-back Grant Basey after just 13 minutes.
Knowing a win would seal glory, the Owls were on the front foot from the outset with Danny Batth heading over the bar and Jose Semedo volleying high when teed up by Antonio.
Bull was inspirational in goal for Wycombe and twice foiled defender Miguel Llera within two minutes before the home side made the breakthrough on 24 minutes.
It came when Antonio used his pace to run onto a through ball and poke the ball over the line.
Although Wanderers held their own at spells, they failed to produce clear-cut chances.
Gareth Ainsworth had their only effort of the first-half when he volleyed a free-kick well wide.
Wednesday got the second goal they craved seven minutes after the restart when on-loan Newcastle striker Nile Ranger headed past Bull.
It was party time at Hillsborough. The stands literally shook as they cheered their side onto victory.
The margin of their victory could have been greater but Bull denied Gary Madine and defender Louis Laing cleared an effort off the line.
All that was left was the pitch invasion and jubilation from the home side and Wycombe left to wonder just when they will taste a game and atmosphere like this again.
