Blues too strong for Magpies in cup semi

Burnham 5-1 Amersham Town

AMERSHAM played well against a team two divisions above them in the league pyramid but Burnham's superior fitness and skill ultimately prevailed in their cup semi on Monday night.

Town went in front on 53 minutes when Karol Derewenko found Liam Thompson, who slipped the ball through for Ryan Forbes to tuck it past Burnham keeper Sam Bunting and in off the post.

But instead of heralding a cup upset, the goal woke up Burnham, who upped the tempo and equalised three minutes later.

After severe pressure on the Amersham goal, the ball fell to Jon Munday, whose shot beat keeper Perry Cheadle, and defender Aaron Morten could only help it into the net.

The next two Burnham goals were comedies of errors. On 58 minutes, a
mistimed clearance ballooned the ball into the Amersham penalty area and Munday was on hand to strike home.

Twelve minutes later, Amersham tried to play the ball out of their area from a free kick, but Burnham’s Harry Pearse intercepted and thrashed an unstoppable shot past Cheadle.

As Amersham tired, their opponents dominated and on 72 minutes, Burnham’s Kieron Knight steered an awkward bouncing cross past Cheadle into the bottom corner, and five minutes later, Knight crashed in an unstoppable shot on the volley.
