Wycombe 5-0 Hartlepool
THE sun shone on Adams Park and left Wycombe with more than a ray of hope of surviving the drop.
Last weekend's defeat to Walsall left Wanderers rock bottom of League One and facing relegation with boss Gary Waddock delving in to the loan market to fix the crisis.
In came Charlton duo Gary Doherty and Paul Hayes, Arsenal's Craig Eastmond and Millwall's Chris Hackett with all four starting this game against Hartlepool on Saturday.
And their arrival has sparked new-found optimism for Wycombe with Hayes netting a brace on his debut and Doherty also adding his name to the seven players to have scored on their bow for the club this season.
And it was a bucannering performance from Waddock's side full of passion, commitment and, of course, quality.
It started after just five minutes when Hayes picked up the ball on the halfway line and only had one thing on his mind.
He waltzed through a static United backline and prodded home after stopper Scott Flinders had parried his first effort.
Ten minutes were on the clock when Doherty, who was superb at the back, powered in a header to put Wycombe in complete control.
It was only a matter of time before top scorer Stuart Beavon got in on the act when his determination to win the ball in the box let to him finish smartly to leave Hartlepool boss Neale Cooper raging at his side at the break.
But they were unable to prevent Wycombe marching towards equalling their highest ever Football League win in the second-halt.
They were fuming when Flinders' goal-kick cannoned off the back of loitering Hayes with Beavon racing on to the loose ball and teeing up his new strike partner for his second and Wycombe's fourth on 55 minutes.
And Beavon matched that effort 19 minutes from time when he completed the scoring.
The win lifts Wycombe off the bottom of the table and three points from safety.
It was like watching a different team at Adams Park today but the weekend trip to Scunthorpe will truly test Wycombe's new-found mettle.
