Gordon Brown has congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her re-election.
In national elections, Mrs Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats were returned again as Germany's biggest party.
She was especially triumphant as early results suggested she would be able to abandon her uneasy coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats.
According to exit polls, Mrs Merkel is now likely to be able to team up with her preferred partners in the pro-business Freedom Party, in a centre-right coalition.
A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "The Prime Minister has sent his congratulations to Chancellor Merkel on her election victory today.
"He looks forward to continuing their close working relationship."
