Speed camera arson attack - Update

Arson is suspected after a speed camera was set on fire in Denham yesterday.

The camera, in North Orbital Road, suffered damage to its top but did not completely burn out.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 9.30pm and extinguished the blaze but it is not yet known why the fire was started.

Michael Shire, 52, who lives nearby, said: "That camera is quite notrious around here and it gets a lot of people. Quite often it gets drivers who are only going slightly more than the 30mph speed limit, so it is quite unpopular.
"I wouldn't be surprised if it had been set on fire by someone returning to try and break the camera and destroy pictures of them speeding."

Firefighters from Gerrards Cross extinguished the blaze and said that they believed that the fire had been started deliberately.

Mr Shire added: "I don't think you could really call it mindless vandalism because it is either someone trying to cover their tracks or someone making a point about speed cameras.
"I wouldn't condone it but it is an interesting way of getting the message across."

The camera suffered some damage to the top section but today it is working as usual.
