Costly police station could close

RE YOUR report in a recent Bucks Advertiser I would suggest putting more policemen at Gerrards, say 20 would do.

I was one of the police officers when it opened in about 1952, moving from the Oxford Road near Dukes Wood Avenue to its present site.

Denham police station was also closed and officers moved to Tatling End. The Inspector resided with his family on the right hand side of the building.

There was one detective sergeant and two detective constables and about 19 constables to cover the area of Denham and Gerrards Cross 24/7.

Twenty years later (1970) the number of officers had doubled and we often included

Chalfont St Peter and St Giles in our area.

I have a photo of 25 police officers, plus admin staff, taken at the back of the policestation – this did not include the night shift, usually five officers.

Gerrards Cross police station was often used as an incident room for murders and serious traffic accidents in what was called the Amersham/Chesham Division of the Buckinghamshire constabulary.

So I would suggest to Chief Constable Thornton – put more policmen there, then there would be no need to close it.
