A bumpy ride around Chilterns

THE deplorable state of our roads as featured in last week's Examiner is not an exaggeration. In fact you have underplayed the situation; but this sorry state is nothing new - 'twas ever thus.

We moved to Chesham from Ruislip in 1963 and a friend said to us 'so you are moving to Bumpy Bucks', to which we replied 'yes, that is part of the charm, we love the Chiltern Hills'. His reply was 'I was referring to the state of the roads, not the Chiltern Hills'.

Perhaps to reduce insurance claims the county should provide warning signs, telling motorists to drive carefully on hazardous road surfaces. They always warn us when white lines are missing and street lights are switched off, so why not about the many potholes?
