The Buckinghamshire Golf Club hosted the finals of the Bucks Challenge Shield, a prestigious ladies’ inter-club match play competition marking its 80th anniversary.
Four very strong teams reached finals day after playing their way through the early knock-out rounds, with 30 clubs entering teams of seven playing a singles match over 18 holes off handicap.
Most players in the semi-finals had single-figure handicaps, wth several either juniors or recent county juniors – a testimony to the hard work put in by the clubs and county over the past few years.
In the morning semi-finals last Monday, Ellesborough were too strong for Burnham Beeches while Woburn had the upper hand over Beaconsfield in a close match.
Ellesborough continued their good form into the afternoon and by the halfway stage they were ahead in five of the seven matches. Some stunning golf was played with the course in excellent condition despite the appalling weather. Fiona Thompson (Ellesborough) and Sarah Mace (Woburn) halved a hole in eagle. Cathy Armstrong (Ellesborough), playing off a handicap of seven, went through the turn nine holes up having played one under par.
Ellesborough went on to win the Bucks Challenge Shield for a sixth time, having last taken the title in 2004.
