TENNIS fans in the south Bucks area got into the mood for Wimbledon with Stoke Park’s annual Boodles Challenge.
The invitation tournament ran from Tuesday to Saturday last week, with additional exhibition matches.
A surprise champion emerged on Saturday as world No 40 Fernando Verdasco saw off former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian in a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Nalbandian had reached his first final at the Stoke Park Club after five years of trying, with a win over the up and coming Russian, Igor Andreev.
But Verdasco, making his Boodles debut, showed that Rafael Nadal is not the only Spaniard to adapt well to the English grass.
He fired some scintillating forehands past the Argentinian during the 65-minute encounter.
Verdasco had also upset the form book on the second day when he dismissed the former US and Australian champion, Marat Safin, in an exciting tie-break decider.
