MP Cheryl Gillan writes:

I AM always delighted when I hear that local young people are involved in the Youth Parliament and other forums in which they can make their views known.
In 2007, for the first time, some of those youngsters will be able to stand for the council elections at the age of 18 rather than 21.
I hope that some local youngsters may decide that they would like to be involved in local government. In the Chiltern District Council area, 375 18-year-olds will be eligible to vote for the first time. It is vital that this age group should be involved and should realise the relevance of casting their votes.
It is equally important that people of all ages should take the trouble to vote on May 3.
The district council’s activities affects everyone. Chiltern District Council spends £113 for every man, woman and child throughout the area. It has a net revenue budget of £10.1m – providing services for the whole community.
This year, parish council elections coincide with the district council ones. There will be a new parish council within my constituency – Little Chalfont.
Through parish precepts, parish councillors can raise and spend revenue locally on parish services, so again it is vital for residents to cast their votes and make their views known.
Local democracy is important. Only by becoming involved in the process can residents make sure that services reflect their needs.
