Yeovil battering baffles Waddock

Gary Waddock

A FUMING Gary Waddock was at a loss to explain how his Wycombe side collapsed to a 4-1 home defeat to Yeovil on Saturday.

Former Blues loanee Dean Bowditch bagged a brace and goals from Andy Welsh and Owain Tudur-Jones completed a double for the Glovers after they trounced Wanderers 4-0 on Boxing Day.

But the manner of the result and performance against an out-of-form Yeovil side who had only won once on the road all season left Waddock shocked and angry after the game.

He said: “I didn't see that coming. After the performance of last week and a few of the games before that, and that was nowhere near the type of game we have been playing recently.

“The performance wasn't good enough. Everyone saw it, I will defend the players but they have shown a big improvement recently but on that evidence that wasn't what we are about.”

Recent weeks had seen Wycombe tighten up defensively and look to be in prime position and form to mount a serious survival challenge.

Waddock said he had warned the players about complacency on Friday but maintained his belief that Blues can survive the drop.

The remain six points from safety but with a woeful goal difference and were saved falling further behind by a number of draws between the bottom sides.

“Everytime they attacked it looked like we were going to concede a goal,” said Waddock. “I thought we had solved that problem in recent games.

“It wasn't very pleasant viewing. You take a step forward but then we took a step back. On today's performance I feel like we are back at square one.

“We get ourselves back into the game and then concede straight away and don't give ourselves a chance.

“To be fair the players have done extremely well in recent weeks and you are not going to get it all your own way between now and the end of the season.

“But we wanted to get back-to-back results and a home result and performance would have given everyone a lift but it wasn't to be.

“There was no imagination, no spark and we were waiting for things to happen.”
